These are every half-hour. The journey from/to Glasgow takes just under an hour. If you're flying in, Prestwick Airport has its own train station. To get to Ayr from Prestwick Airport by train takes about 15 minutes.
Surrounding villages are served by buses, mostly operated by Stagecoach. These are fairly frequent during the week, but evening and Sunday services are rather infrequent.

Things to see: The big draw to Ayrshire is golf. Troon, Prestwick and Turnberry are all within spitting distance. For culture and history, there is of course all the Robert Burns stuff, as well as Culzean Castle.
Trainspotters should head to Waterside near Patna, where the Ayrshire Railway Preservation Group runs steam trains on summer Sundays (note these are pretty much finished for this year, check www.arpg.org.uk for dates)

Eating out: Ayr is well served with eateries. For Coffee lovers there's Bean Scene, Caffe Nero, Costa and Pandora. No Starbucks though! For Chinese, try New City in the Sandgate. For a more local flavour, try the restraunt in the Horizon hotel on the seafront (advanced booking required). Or for Fish and chips, my favourite is Dino's in Burn's statue Square.

Dancing: There's basically 3 nightclubs in Ayr. Club de Mar is the most well known, and is rather upmarket. Madison's caters for a younger crowd and is generally a bit of a hole. I'm more likely to be found in Fury Murrays (formerly the Powerhouse) in Nile Court. Friday nights are better there that's when they play more rock music and Harley's pub downstairs has live bands) Saturdays they play more commercial pop crap.

Showtime: Sadly, due to council cuts the Gaitey theatre is closed at the minute (there is a local campaign to have it reopened). However, some shows are going on at the Citadel sports centre. These include (this year) Roy "Chubby" Brown, Jim Davidson and the Lady Boys of Bankok (sorry, but this isn't fucking Edinburgh!)
Ayr of course has an Odeon cinema. Unfortunately, all the best films are shown at the big multiplex up in Kilmarnock (cunts!)

Gigs: See local press for details. The annual "Septembayr" festival is coming in September (obviously), with shows from a lot of small, local bands you'll never have heard of.

Victoria on Vancouver island is another reasonable option, possibly even preferable to the GVA if you find employment there.

Basically, this. Vancouver and Victoria are the only cities i've been to in Canada, but I can recommend them both. Gastown in Vancouver is a lovely old area with plenty of touristy shops (there's a British shop where you can buy Tetley tea bags, HP sauce, etc.). However, as with any big city, there's a fair number of vagrants. I can highly recommend the flying wedge for pizza.
Vancouver station is a nice building but poorly served by shops and if i remember right you can't get on the platform without a ticket. And the car park smells of wee.

People rarely have good things to say about Toronto out here (not that we bring it up for the sake of it).

2) Please. Toronto has had two days with an Air Quality rating of 7+ this year, and days in the 4-6 range aren't uncommon. I'm not saying it's Beijing or LA bad, but compared to other Canadian cities it's awful.

3) You're not fooling anyone here. Just part of living in a city with a population as high as Toronto's, crowding becomes an issue. Typical Torontonian, trying so hard to BS about their city.

4) Right, because access to foreign foods is really all that matters when discussing immigration policy and the pros and cons of multiculturalism.

5) Uh, ow? Face it, the vast majority of Toronto's population can't shut up about how they're "basically the same as New York" or "one of the most important cities in the world" etc.

It's smoggy, it's crowded, it's full of immigrants, and it's population are self-entitled cunts.

Torontonian here. WTF are you talking about?
1) Canadians hate Toronto - Not true. I've lived in Ottawa, Vancouver, Edmonton and Montreal for numerous years, and no one has ever said bad things about Toronto, and they have no reason to. We're not snobs and we like the rest of Canada just fine. Canadians are 80% the same, whatever province you're in.
2) Smoggy - LOLWUT? Has Toronto EVER had a smog problem? This isn't LA. We actually give a shit about our environment.
3) Crowded - nope. It's no more crowded than any other Canadian city. Which is to say, not crowded at all.
4) full of immigrants - yup. It's the most multicultural city on the planet. I like it. I can eat Greek, Indian, French, Spanish, Jamaican, Japanese, etc. food whenever I want. We all get along quite well. Life sucks here if you're a racist, of course. If that's your cup of tea, you'll be alone and miserable.
5) self-entitled cunts - There's no real response to this, except to say that you're obviously unhappy in life. Someone beat you up a lot as a kid or stole your sweets, but that's not Toronto's fault.

808

Bringing minimal clothes is the big one. Lay out what you want to bring for clothing, then take half. Then take half of that. While bringing lots of pairs of underwear and some extra socks is a very good idea, everything after that needs to be carefully looked at. One pair of jeans, and one (maybe two, maybe) pair of shorts is all you need for your lower body, and a few t-shirts combined with a really solid hoodie that can double as a raincoat should be all you need for your upper body. Bonus points if the material that makes up your clothes is very light and can be washed by hand in a hostel sink.

All purpose bodywash stuff that can be used as both soap, and shampoo is great. I've heard tale of stuff that can also be used as toothpaste as well, but that might be going a bit far. Keeping toiletries to the minimum isn't that big of a deal after all.

A deck of cards is a lot smaller than bringing books to read on a long plane flight or train trip. Good thing to have when meeting other travellers as well, much more of a social item than a novel to read. Less likely to lose track of time and miss a train as well might I add.

A solid phone is a great way to get rid of maps, travel guides, phrase books, and anything else like that. Being able to play music from it is a huge plus too (one less item, one less charger), as is being able to use it as a camera (if possible, not always practical or desirable). Unbelievable how useful a blackberry, or iPhone or whatever else can be when backpacking, never leave home without one.

If you're going to be bringing a sleeping bag and travel pillow make sure you grab a mummy that can collapse down into a very compact space. I personally have a little Asolo Cortina mummy bag that weighs all of 2lbs and can be compressed to less than the size of an american football. The thing is a godsend for those who don't feel like wasting money on questionable hostel linens, especially in combination with my little collapsible travel pillow. Skip foamies unless you know for sure you're going to need them (ie: you're going to be sleeping in a tent for an extended period of time), even the worst hostel mattresses aren't that bad.

Those were the big things for me when I was backpacking. Clothes are the biggest pain in the ass, everything after that isn't so bad if you have a solid phone.
